Two Master’s Degree Programs

The MA in Physical Education with a specialization in Teaching Adapted Physical Education is a 33-credit program for teachers who already have New York state teacher licenses in K–12 certification in physical education. This adaptive physical education program prepares teachers as specialists in providing adapted physical education instruction and intervention in a variety of school-based settings. Through specific coursework, learn to apply knowledge of characteristics, assess movement abilities, modify activities and plan programs to provide appropriate physical education and activity instruction to students of all ability levels. Participate in enriching and rewarding hands-on learning options, such as Camp Abilities Long Island, a developmental sports program for children who are visually impaired, blind or deaf-blind.

The MA in Physical Activity Studies with a specialization in Teaching Adapted Physical Education, also a 33-credit program, is for students who do not hold a teaching license and want to better include people with disabilities in nonschool settings, such as YMCA and parks and recreation programs. It offers courses preparing practitioners in inclusive physical activity, sports and recreation. With our adapted physical education degree you’ll learn to craft inclusive physical activity experiences that maximize participation for individuals with disabilities.

The adapted physical education graduate program is taught in person with some classes offered online, emphasizing practical, hands-on experience working with students with disabilities. The classes are designed to equip you with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to include students with disabilities in your classes and foster physical literacy. You’ll learn under the guidance of highly experienced professors who have dedicated many years to working with students with disabilities.

Yes, Â鶹ֱ²¥ offers a dual program in teaching adapted physical education and completing your initial New York state  license to teach Health Education K-12 at the graduate level. Simply indicate to your adviser at your one-to-one orientation that you would like an accelerated pathway to achieving both. At the end of your program, you would have an initial New York state teaching K-12 license in physical education and health education, a master’s degree, and be eligible to take the exam for a national certification as a Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) through the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities.

If you already have a master’s degree but still want to advance your career with adapted physical education, Adelphi offers a Graduate Certificate in Adapted Physical Education. This 15-credit-hour certification has all the flexibility of the graduate program while helping those who already have master’s degrees expand their knowledge.
