The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Â鶹ֱ²¥ as No. 29 on its Top 30 College & University list of the largest green power users among higher education institutions in EPA’s Green Power Partnership for the second year in a row. Adelphi is also ranked second in the Northeast-10 Conference in the EPA’s College and University Green Power Challenge, which tracks the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green power usage in the nation. Additionally, the University qualifies for EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded EPA’s minimum purchase requirements.

Currently, Adelphi uses more than 21 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) ofÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýannually, enoughÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýto meet 100 percent of its electricity use. The green power resources that the University uses include biogas, biomass, solar and wind. The University buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Renewable Choice Energy as well as generatesÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýfrom an on-site solar energy system. According to the EPA, Â鶹ֱ²¥â€™sÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýpurchase of more than 21 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 3,000 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 2,000 average American homes annually.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýÌýis a voluntary program that encourages organizations to buy greenÌýpowerÌýas a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with electricity use. °Õ³ó±ðÌýPartnershipÌýcurrently has more than 1,300 partnerÌýorganizations voluntarily purchasing billions of kilowatt-hours ofÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýannually. PartnersÌýinclude a wide variety of leading organizations such as Fortune 500® companies; small and medium sized businesses; local, state, and federal governments; and colleges and universities.
