Teaching Philosophy

In lecture, recitation, and laboratory, I want to engage students in group work to practice concepts from class, and to take part in laboratory activities. This style is most similar to my work as a teaching assistant at UChicago. Small group settings make it easier to solicit answers from students, and to occasionally have a student talk through their method of solving a problem.

At the end of a course, I want my students to be able to methodically apply the concepts they have learned in future chemistry courses and laboratories, and to analyze new information in the context of their scientific skills and practices. This will also prepare them for careers and any future science courses they take.

My current projects focus on testing peptides that may exhibit binding to the pathogen Trichomonas vaginalis, and on studying statistical copolymers that can individually form small particles, called micelles, capable of encapsulating therapeutic molecules.

I will endeavor to form collaborations both within and outside of the Chemistry department, to introduce techniques in peptide and polymer synthesis and characterization to our students, and to research those molecules in the context of their interactions with biopolymers.

Both my Ph. D. research (at UChicago) and my postdoctoral research (at NIST) heavily involved X-ray and neutron scattering techniques performed at government laboratories like Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. I have previously applied these scattering techniques to biological and polymer materials, for purposes ranging from the development of drug delivery vehicles, to determining the behavior of proteins and nucleic acids interacting with polymers. Long Island hosts Brookhaven National Laboratory, and its National Synchrotron Light Source II and another major research goal of mine is to strengthen the connection of 麻豆直播’s students and faculty to this world-renowned research institution.
