Earning your master’s and advanced certificate in our dual program will give you New York State teacher certification to teach both physical education and health education to pre-K–12 students in schools, after-school physical activities or sports programs. You’ll learn how to promote healthy living through skills-based learning strategies, developmentally appropriate assessment design and the use of educational technology. At Adelphi, we believe that hands-on experience is key to setting our students up for future career success. This Health and Physical Education graduate program is structured around real-world opportunities from beginning to end. Hone your skills and boost your confidence in our health and physical education fieldwork internship courses, which include opportunities for those without a current teaching certificate to student-teach full time alongside a cooperating teacher, supervised by an Adelphi faculty member. Placements are available both in New York City and on Long Island, allowing you to tailor the experience to your needs, goals and schedule.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Graduate application and $60 fee
  • Online survey completed by two recommenders
  • Personal essay
  • Official transcripts from all prior institutions and proof of bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Résumé (preferred)

All teacher certification candidates must take and pass New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification, which includes the Content Specialty Test in both Physical Education and Health Education.

Physical education teaches K-12 students skills and concepts that will help them be active throughout their lives. Whereas health education provides students with skills that will allow them to reduce risky health behavior in schools, physical education is taught in movement settings and health education is taught in the classroom.

The dual health and physical education graduate program at Adelphi is taught in person with some of the classes offered online. The focus of the dual master’s program is on creating community and personal connections between professors and peers while offering the convenience of learning online.

Graduate classes for the health and physical education program are offered Monday through Thursday evenings throughout the year, allowing you to move through the program more quickly. Adelphi offers rolling admission, which means that you have the option of starting the dual degree program at five different points throughout the year (fall semester, January Intersession, spring semester, or May or July sessions). Once you are admitted, you’re ready to go!

Yes, you will be able to apply to work in specific districts. For those who already work in schools, our team at Adelphi will help you work with your school’s administration to create a schedule that will allow you  to complete your fieldwork hours during your downtime in the school day. Students who already have an initial New York State teacher license do not need to student teach.
