In a four-lane pool tucked inside the modest walls of Woodruff Hall, a legacy is being carved with each stroke.

Sophomore swimmer and business major , a globetrotting son of a diplomat who at one time had no permanent place to call home, has made 麻豆直播 just that鈥攁 home. And not just for himself, but for a program and a community rising with him.

This season, Kakimseit not only repeated as the NE10 Championship Swimmer of the Meet and Swimmer of the Year, but helped lead the 麻豆直播 men鈥檚 swimming and diving team to a historic second-place finish at the 2025 NE10 Championship鈥攊t was the best finish in the program鈥檚 history, eclipsing last year鈥檚 third-place result, and a defining mark for a group that walked into the final day of competition in first place.

Swimming Medals in the Case, Not on the Mantel

Swimmer holds up large flag of Kazakhstan in honor of his cultural heritage.

Kakimseit holds the national flag听of Kazakhstan during first-year picture day, honoring his cultural heritage.

鈥淪wimming is a lifestyle,鈥 Kakimseit said. 鈥淚t takes discipline, it takes intention. And every medal I鈥檝e earned here? That鈥檚 our team鈥檚 success. That鈥檚 why they belong in Adelphi鈥檚 trophy case, not my dorm.鈥

Humility isn鈥檛 always a headlining trait in collegiate athletics, but it may just be the foundation of Kakimseit鈥檚 greatness. All his NE10 championship medals, along with his NE10 Swimmer and Rookie of the Year plaques from a year ago, are proudly displayed in the team鈥檚 trophy case that stands inside Adelphi鈥檚 Center for Recreation and Sports鈥攁 gesture emblematic of an individual who refuses to take sole credit for shared victories.

鈥淩yan is an outstanding young man,鈥 described fourth-year head coach , who was also honored as the NE10 Men鈥檚 Swimming Coach of the Year for the second time in as many seasons. 鈥淗e works four jobs, maintains a near-4.0 GPA, and still finds time to lead this team with integrity. He has helped transform this program in a significant way.鈥

Kakimseit, arms outstretched, powers through the water toward the viewer.

Shattering Records, Redefining Expectations

The transformation is undeniable. Kakimseit owns school records in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, along with four of the program鈥檚 five relay records. The record board? Almost completely rewritten in Danin鈥檚 tenure, particularly this season.

But for Kakimseit? The journey wasn鈥檛 always linear. With a diplomat mother, he lived a transient childhood across multiple continents鈥攁 life of constant adaptation. That sense of impermanence would rattle most young athletes. It only propelled him forward.

鈥淚 know what it鈥檚 like to feel like a stranger,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淏ut here, I know the faces when I walk into the [Ruth S. Harley University Center] or at the pool. I鈥檓 a name, not a number. That鈥檚 why I love Adelphi.鈥

Global Roots, Panther Pride

Kakimseit swims on his side, with left arm outstretched before him

Grounded in gratitude, Kakimseit鈥檚 character has inspired not just his teammates but other swimmers far beyond the Garden City campus.

鈥淲e鈥檙e a very international team. I always tell recruits, take the risk. If your heart believes in a program, follow it. The best-case scenario outweighs the worst tenfold,鈥 Kakimseit explained.

A Mission to Elevate Adelphi Swimming

Despite the accolades to this point, he isn鈥檛 done. His sights are firmly set on qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championship and helping the Panthers win their first-ever NE10 championship title.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot more to come,鈥 Kakimseit said. 鈥淚 need to get stronger, refine my training and keep pushing. But we鈥檙e going to do everything with more intent next year. We鈥檙e so close.鈥

Danin agrees, and he has a blueprint. The agenda includes more long-course training. A winter training trip to Barbados. Greater team commitment from the jump. 鈥淲e were 34 points out this year. That鈥檚 a hair鈥檚 breadth. We鈥檒l close the gap.鈥

The Ripple Effect for Adelphi Athletics

Kakimseit, wearing swim trunks, holds up swim cap.

Kakimseit, pictured with his cap, ahead of his sophomore听campaign.

The stakes are as personal as they are professional. For Danin, the drive to build a persistent championship program isn鈥檛 just about medals鈥攊t鈥檚 about legacy. And for Kakimseit, a legacy is everything.

鈥淚 want to graduate and look back at how far the team has come,鈥 Kakimseit stated. 鈥淢ore than what I leave behind on the record board, I want to see growth in my teammates as people.鈥

And yet, the numbers don鈥檛 lie. In just two years, he has become one of the most decorated swimmers in the conference鈥檚 history鈥攐nly the fifth swimmer ever to be named NE10 Men鈥檚 Swimmer of the Year in consecutive seasons. He may be soft-spoken, but his marks do the talking.

“My job isn鈥檛 done until [Ryan is] an All-American,” Danin said. “We鈥檙e not resting until we get him to nationals.”

For a swimmer who gives more credit than he takes, legacy is already set in motion. The ripples of his impact are spreading far beyond the lane lines鈥攁nd they鈥檙e just getting started.

In total, all 25 match and challenge gifts were completed鈥攁mounting to $164,850鈥攁mplifying the day鈥檚 impact and sustaining momentum throughout the event.

Additionally, 1,327 donors made contributions of $250 or less, collectively raising $89,664, underscoring the powerful impact of grassroots giving.

Giving Day concluded with a $100,000 commitment from Savills North America, supporting the development of Adelphi鈥檚 new Manhattan Center. To commemorate the occasion, members of the Adelphi community gathered in New York City on April 10 for a groundbreaking ceremony and celebration.

Building Momentum Toward a Bright Future

This year鈥檚 Giving Day is part of The Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact, Adelphi鈥檚 ongoing fundraising initiative dedicated to supporting student success, academic excellence and innovation across all campuses.

Men鈥檚 Basketball: A Season of Resurgence

The orchestrated a remarkable year, concluding the season with a 26-8 record. Under the guidance of Head Coach Dave Duke, the clinched their first NE10 regular-season championship since the 2011鈥2012 season, marking a significant milestone in the program鈥檚 history. This achievement propelled them into the NCAA Tournament, their first appearance under Duke and the program鈥檚 first since 2012, when they were led by James Cosgrove, now an NCAA Division III National Champion at Trinity College in Connecticut.鈥

Individual accolades further underscored the team鈥檚 success. 鈥檚 defensive prowess earned him the NE10 Defensive Player of the Year title. 鈥檚 exceptional leadership was recognized with his first NE10 Coach of the Year award, making him the first Adelphi men鈥檚 basketball coach to receive this honor. Offensively, both Andres Fulgencio and Dayshaun Walton were named NE10 First Team All-Conference, with Walton also securing a spot on the NABC All-District First Team.鈥

Men鈥檚 Lacrosse: Eyes on the Prize

The began its national title defense with high expectations, bolstered by its No. 1 preseason national ranking. A significant highlight leading up to the season was goaltender , making him the first Adelphi men鈥檚 lacrosse player to earn consideration for what is considered the Heisman Trophy of men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 college lacrosse. Renner was also honored by USA Lacrosse Magazine as its . The Panthers have already begun imparting their dominance with a 9-0 start to the season鈥攎aking them one of only three teams in the country to still possess an undefeated record.

Swimming and Diving: Kakimseit鈥檚 Stellar Splash

The made waves this season, powered by the . His outstanding contributions were pivotal in Adelphi鈥檚 historic runner-up finish at the 2025 NE10 Championship in February, the program鈥檚 best since joining the league in the 2009鈥2010 season. Kakimseit鈥檚 individual point total of 60 earned him the prestigious NE10 Men鈥檚 Swimmer of the Meet honor. Then in March, he added to his trophy case by picking up his second-consecutive Swimmer of the Year award. He wasn鈥檛 the only aquatic Panther to win top awards from the conference, though. Freshman was honored as the NE10 Rookie of the Year, becoming the third Adelphi swimmer in four years to win the award, following Kakimseit in 2024 and in 2022. 鈥檚听election as Coach of the Year for the second-straight year completed Adelphi鈥檚 domination of the conference鈥檚 major awards.

Women鈥檚 Basketball: A Resilient Run

Under the leadership of alumna Head Coach Sade Jackson 鈥14, the Adelphi showcased resilience and determination. They advanced to the NE10 semifinals for the first time since their impressive 27-3 run in 2020, concluding the season with a balanced 15-15 record.

Softball: A New Chapter Begins

The Adelphi ushered in a new era with the appointment of Katie Apostolopoulos as the 10th head coach in Adelphi鈥檚 storied softball history. Apostolopoulos aims to build upon the solid foundation established over the past six seasons under Carla Campagna, who departed for Division I Iona University last summer. The team鈥檚 future looks promising as they strive to continue their legacy of success.

A Testament to Excellence

These accomplishments have propelled 麻豆直播 to a close second place in the through the winter season, reflecting the collective success of its athletic programs. As the Panthers continue to excel, they embody the spirit of champions, inspiring pride and anticipation for future triumphs within the Adelphi community.

Winter break is usually a time to put down the books, but some students use their time away from campus to explore even further. This past January, Adelphi students traveled to Portugal on a six-day trip, experiencing the sights and culture, while contributing to the community.听The Portugal trip was one of many Alternative Break Programs at Adelphi, combining travel with service learning.

The group stayed in the coastal city of Estoril and visited other areas in the western part of Portugal, including Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra. Interacting with community members, students volunteered on three evenings during the trip at , whose mission is to stop food waste by rescuing food from supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and more to feed communities in need.

Making Memories and Helping Communities

A听local team in Portugal drove the group to their locations each day, teaching them about various traditions and other aspects of Portuguese culture. Led by Kelsey D鈥橝ndrea, assistant director of the Center for Student and Community Engagement, they had the chance to explore the cities, taking in the architecture and cuisine.

鈥淪tudents enjoyed getting to meet people from all over the world,鈥 D鈥橝ndrea said. 鈥淎t our hostel, there was a school from Indiana, as well as individuals from Canada, the UK, Brazil and other areas. Students were able to bond with other Adelphi participants on the trip and create friendships. Many students agree that a weeklong trip is the perfect amount of time, and some even wished it was longer, as they mention time flew by while there. They enjoyed being able to give back to the community in need.鈥

For Students, an Unforgettable Journey

Keri Sullivan, a junior physical education major, said the most memorable part of the trip was their visit to the beautiful seaside town of Sintra, particularly the exploration of Pena Palace.

鈥淭his experience stood out to me due to the palace鈥檚 breathtaking beauty and the journey leading up to it,鈥 she said. 鈥淭raveling on this trip has had a profound impact on me, inspiring a deeper desire to explore new destinations and embrace future opportunities.鈥

In the spring, Adelphi is hosting more faculty-led trips, including study abroad in the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, Kenya and Norway. Summer opportunities include Italy and Poland.

鈥淔or those considering studying abroad, my best advice is to seize the opportunity while you are young and have the flexibility to do so,鈥 Sullivan said. 鈥淭raveling is a privilege, and Adelphi offers exceptional programs that allow students to broaden their horizons and experience the world firsthand.鈥

Walk by Earle Hall on Adelphi鈥檚 Garden City campus and you鈥檒l see colorful letters across the ground-level windows spelling out 鈥淲elcome to the Panther Pantry.鈥 It鈥檚 the home of the University鈥檚 student-led organization that provides members of the Adelphi community experiencing food insecurity with ingredients and toiletry items, free of charge.

Erica Gibson, a third-year senior psychology major with a double minor in ethics, law, and justice and criminal justice, is the volunteer coordinator of the Panther Pantry. She says items like peanut butter, pasta and sauce are popular with Pantry patrons, but she wanted to encourage people to incorporate healthy ingredients like the fresh vegetables offered.

With the holiday season around the corner, Gibson and team have put together their first-ever digital cookbook. Titled Sweet Pea’s Cookbook, it contains 30 community-crafted recipes. Now Pantry guests can not only pick up pasta but also get ideas for how to create a tasty and healthier dish with vegetables on the side and spices from the Panther Pantry鈥檚 selection. 鈥淲e want the Pantry to be available for those that need a quick bite and for those that want to create a full meal,鈥 Gibson said, adding, 鈥淭he Panther Pantry is at its best when we can help people.鈥

The cookbooks were initially sold for $5 at a recent fall fundraiser to help raise funds for the Pantry but is now available for free in their office on the lower level of Earle Hall. As of now, the cookbook is accessible with a QR code that鈥檚 posted in the Pantry, and it鈥檚 planned to be added to in the near future as well.

鈥淲e want to improve our Pantry with variety, making bigger and better cookbooks, things of that nature, with the end goal eventually being both a digital and physical cookbook,鈥 Gibson said. 鈥淲ith the wonderful support of our community, I think it’s something that would be possible sooner rather than later.鈥

The cover of the cookbook features a panther, but this isn’t Paws; it鈥檚 Sweet Pea. 鈥淪he is our main mascot,鈥 said Gibson. And her cover companion is her brother, a bear named Griffin who 鈥渆ntered the family last year when I thought Sweet Pea looked a little lonely in the Pantry. Same as Sweet Pea, a variety of names were suggested by our volunteers and we all voted.鈥 They are featured on the cover, she said, 鈥渂ecause they tie the volunteers together as a community.鈥

Healthy for the Holidays

The cookbook also offers recipes for a mini Thanksgiving meal of mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, carrots and an optional choice of meat as well as a no-meat Thanksgiving meal and recipes for apple crisp, oatmeal pumpkin pie, apple oatmeal pie, apple cranberry oatmeal pie and crunchy stuffing.

And to make Thanksgiving even easier for patrons, the Pantry is offering another first: Thanksgiving meal kits, which contain all the ingredients needed for a full Thanksgiving meal, including turkey stuffing, cranberry sauce, corn, carrots, green beans, pumpkin and apple pie fillings, and a graham cracker pie crust.

Due to anticipated demand, those interested can fill out an for a kit until November 22 at 11:59 p.m.

Powered by Panthers

The efforts of volunteers are what help the Pantry to help as many students as possible, especially during the holiday season, and Gibson鈥檚 community-building background led her to take on her volunteer coordinator role. She became a part of the Panther Pantry after joining Adelphi鈥檚 award-winning First-Year Community Action Program, in which first-year students weed community gardens, work at the VA hospital and otherwise perform community service before starting their first semester at Adelphi. She met dedicated individuals on campus who believed in giving back, including the Pantry student staff. She鈥檚 since sought out other philanthropy and leadership opportunities at Adelphi, such as being the president of the Resident Student Association, becoming a Prestigious Panther and serving on the Women’s Leadership Conference Steering Committee since Fall 2023.

The Panther Pantry is active year-round and welcomes student volunteers, especially those who can work during times such as Thanksgiving break, finals week and winter break. It will be open during its regular hours Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and will start their seasonal hours on Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.

September 27 to September 29 marked Adelphi鈥檚 eighth annual Spirit Weekend. This year, the popular event was preceded by the launch of The Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact on September 26. Students, faculty and staff kicked off the campaign with a block-party-style celebration where trees were planted and gold pinwheels were personalized to be displayed near the Swirbul Library.

Then enthusiastic current Panthers, alumni, and friends and family came together for Spirit Weekend. Among the many activities was the naming of the Prestigious Panthers and Spirit Court.

In 2018, Adelphi introduced a more gender-inclusive Prestigious Panthers and Spirit Court to replace the traditional Homecoming King and Queen and Homecoming Court. As is the case every year, those given these titles represent the best of Adelphi, both on an academic level and in terms of their involvement with the community, all adding up to their total Panther pride.

Kelsey D’Andrea, assistant director for the Center for Student and Community Engagement, said, “Our Prestigious Panthers and Spirit are exceptional students who exemplify the spirit of Adelphi through their dedication, leadership and involvement in various activities within our campus community. Their hard work and passion for Adelphi truly shines through their academic achievements and extracurricular activities.”

Meet the Prestigious Panthers

Monish Churaman is a finance major involved with many campus organizations. His roles include alumni relations chair for Pi Lambda Phi and vice president of finance of Delta Sigma Pi. He鈥檚 also received numerous scholarships and awards, including Adelphi鈥檚 Presidential Scholarship, the 2024 President鈥檚 Student Leadership Award, the Ann & Irving A. Berk Scholarship Award, and the 2023 Emerging Leader Award. Outside of Adelphi, Churaman interned as a commercial banking summer fellow at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and worked as a global markets summer analyst at Soci茅t茅 G茅n茅rale this past summer.

鈥淲hile my time on campus has been comparably short compared to other seniors, I feel that my impact has been felt on campus,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 put my best foot forward every day to make the school as proud as it can be.鈥 – Monish Churaman

Erica Gibson is majoring in psychology and minoring in ethics, law, and justice, and criminal justice, and is in the Emerging Scholars Program for psychology. She is currently the president of Gamma Beta Phi Society, the service coordinator for the , coordinator for Adelphi鈥檚 Panther Pantry and executive vice president of external affairs for the Student Government Association. Gibson also acted as a First-Year Community Action Program leader, developed leadership skills as part of LeaderShape in the summer of 2022 and has over 250 certified hours of volunteer work to her name.

鈥淎delphi has shaped everything that I am. I鈥檝e made the most out of this experience. There were people at Adelphi who believed in me, showed up for me, supported me 鈥 and I鈥檓 here because of them. I am the culmination of everything that everyone has put into me.鈥 – Erica Gibson

Joe Sawma is majoring in biology and minoring in marketing. He鈥檚 the secretary for the Levermore Global Scholars Student Leadership Council, has lent his efforts to the Equitable Adelphi Action Team and has been active in the Student Government Association as a senator, parliamentarian and two-time president. His awards and accolades include 2021鈥2022 Outstanding First-Year Student, the 2022鈥2023 Sue Levering Social Justice Award and a fellowship at Lion’s Eye Bank for Long Island at Northwell Health through Adelphi鈥檚 Jaggar Community Fellows Program.

鈥淭o me, being a Panther has a lot of meanings. It means being someone who embodies the brown and gold, supporting the values of the campus … My advice to future Panthers would be to get involved on campus. Try anything and everything out and try to commit to finding one thing that you really enjoy to get more deeply involved in.鈥 – Joe Sawma

Meet the Spirit Court

The Prestigious Panthers were joined by the impressive students selected for the Spirit Court.

  • Dean Bair
  • Nino Burjanadze
  • Emily Ledesma
  • Toni Ann Rubbo

Before even setting foot in an Adelphi classroom, some members of the incoming Class of 2028 were already getting involved. These passionate Panthers weeded and harvested vegetables for 鈥檚 indoor produce market in Malverne, New York; beautified a garden to brighten the days of the veterans at the in Northport, New York; and organized and sorted clothes and nonperishable items at Adelphi鈥檚 own Panther Pantry.

These students participated in the First-Year Community Action Program (FCAP). Offered by the Center for Student and Community Engagement (CSE) since 2006, the program is open to all incoming first-year students, with 20 participating this summer with the help of upper-division-student FCAP leaders.

鈥淔CAP teaches students that it鈥檚 important to give back to the community,鈥 said Kelsey D鈥橝ndrea, assistant director of the CSE. She explained that FCAP drives home the importance of giving back to the greater Long Island community. The program helps students understand how local organizations are helping as well as gives them the opportunity to see a side of the area they may not normally see while working with like-minded individuals who believe in helping others.

Not only does the program provide Adelphi and local nonprofits with much-needed assistance, D鈥橝ndrea stated that 鈥渉aving students who understand the different struggles our community faces gives them a better perception on where they can help to make a difference.鈥

Students Effecting Change

Some students plan to continue in their efforts. Mark Cohen, a sport management major, said he felt that what he was doing was bringing together Adelphi students with members of the greater Long Island community.

鈥淚 especially liked helping the veterans,鈥 he said, 鈥渂ecause I feel like they have done the work for us by protecting our country and putting country first, so I feel like we should help them.听 Even if it鈥檚 in a small way, it makes a big impact on the veterans.鈥

Siddhi Pandey, a nursing major, chose to participate in FCAP because it offered her the chance to build friendships before starting college and provided an opportunity to give back to her community through meaningful service projects.

鈥淚 learned that making a difference in the community doesn鈥檛 require a lot鈥攊t鈥檚 all about having the right mindset,鈥 Pandey said. 鈥淲hen you’re eager to help, the work becomes enjoyable and doesn鈥檛 feel like a chore. Community service is not just about work; it is also about learning to be more empathetic and compassionate toward the community. It taught me communication, collaboration and leadership skills, and how much of an impact I can make on my community.鈥

As she begins her first semester at Adelphi, Pandey plans to join clubs dedicated to giving back and is interested in applying to become a FCAP leader.

鈥淚 was very fortunate to have such wonderful leaders this year who are the rock of the program,鈥 D鈥橝ndrea said. 鈥淭hey are some of the most genuine and supportive students I’ve met, and I’m glad our first-year students were able to meet and learn from them.鈥

From 1972 to 1995, Adelphi was a force on the Long Island airwaves. During the peak of campus station WBAU鈥檚 broadcasting history, future stars like rapper Chuck D 鈥84, 鈥13 (Hon.) and Yo, MTV Raps! host Dr. Dre were bringing in the sounds of the new hip-hop scene from New York City. More recently, Panthers have taken to the broadband waves with the . But in the last few years, PAWS had fallen silent. Honors College student Errah Fawad is looking to get Adelphi back on the air.

As a senator on the Student Government Association (SGA), Fawad has been organizing general interest meetings and surveying equipment and studios with plans to relaunch PAWS by the end of the year.

鈥淚 used to volunteer at the Panther Pantry in the basement of Earle Hall,鈥 Fawad said when asked about her decision to work on reviving the station. 鈥淚 would walk through the hallway and just look across the rooms. And one day I see, oh, there’s a radio station here. And I peek inside the window, and there are microphones and all this crazy equipment. I’m like, wait, what鈥檚 happening here? Who runs this?鈥

A quick Instagram search showed Fawad that nothing had been posted on the PAWS account for the last two years. She started asking around and sending emails, and before long she was proposing PAWS as an SGA semester project.

鈥淭here was just this excitement across the room,鈥 she said. 鈥淧eople who hadn鈥檛 heard of the station but had either prior experience or interest in radio were so enthusiastic. Everyone came up to me after the meeting was over, asking 鈥楬ow I can get involved?鈥 And I think at that point I realized, oh, this is a project that needs major undertaking.鈥

Making audio connections

Ana Isabel Sim贸n-Alegre, PhD, assistant professor of African, Black and Caribbean Studies, shares Fawad鈥檚 excitement鈥攁nd is her mentor on the project.

鈥淩adio has been a constant presence in my life,鈥 Dr. Sim贸n-Alegre said. 鈥淔rom early in the morning until late at night, my mother and grandmother always kept it on.鈥

Dr. Sim贸n-Alegre isn鈥檛 just a lifetime listener; she鈥檚 incorporated radio and podcasting into her classroom. During the pandemic lockdown, she recorded lectures to ensure she was connecting with students with her voice and had students create podcast episodes as a final project. Working with Adelphi鈥檚 Innovation Center, she enlisted radio professionals to help polish and refine the projects. Through a Dean鈥檚 Innovation Grant, she extended the effort to all of her classes.

鈥淭he most rewarding part of this project is not just listening to the episodes produced by the students each semester, but also seeing how it has inspired outstanding students like Errah Fawad,鈥 Dr. Sim贸n-Alegre said. 鈥淎fter completing my class, Errah chose to continue exploring the world of radio and podcasts. Now, in the fall semester of 2024, thanks to her initiative and the support of her peers, the Adelphi radio club is active once again, and they have my full support to continue moving forward.鈥

Community radio for all communities

Fawad is reaching out to her fellow Panthers, no experience necessary, and is looking forward to bringing her own studies and heritage to PAWS and encouraging classmates to do the same.

鈥淚鈥檓 from Pakistan, and I have this rich Desi [South Asian] heritage,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 a neuroscience major. I love brains. I love science. There鈥檚 a whole part of me that鈥檚 very nerdy. I鈥檓 still playing around with ideas. I have a bunch of people who reached out to me saying they wanted to collaborate one way or another. Like this one girl, she鈥檚 Desi. She wanted to start this radio show with a bunch of other Desi girls on campus to create that safe space. I was like, oh, that鈥檚 interesting, I might even end up joining them.鈥
