On April 10, members of the Adelphi community gathered in the heart of Midtown Manhattan to celebrate this bold leap forward—one that promises to redefine career-focused undergraduate, graduate and professional education in New York City.

Located at 529 Fifth Avenue, just steps from Bryant Park and Grand Central Station, the custom-designed center will span three floors and comprise more than 51,000 square feet. Slated to open in 2026, the new space marks a major milestone in the University’s mission to provide transformative, accessible and future-focused learning opportunities for students in the city that never sleeps.

“This new center is a critical component of our institutional priority to have a vibrant space in New York City,†said Adelphi President Christine M. Riordan. “Guided by our Momentum 2 strategic plan, this project enables us to expand access to dynamic educational programs and strengthen our commitment to graduate, adult and professional learners.â€

A Vibrant Location Meets Next-Gen Learning

With its Fifth Avenue address at the intersection of culture, commerce and innovation, Adelphi’s Manhattan Center places students at the doorstep of Fortune 500 companies, major healthcare institutions, and world-class arts and civic organizations. The location will supercharge internship, employment and networking opportunities while offering proximity to the best the city has to offer.

A modern academic hub, Adelphi’s Manhattan Center will be filled with cutting-edge features and thoughtful amenities designed for today’s learners:

  • Smart classrooms, simulation labs, and specialized learning spaces for teacher education, nursing, health sciences and anatomy
  • A fully equipped library, computer lab, private study areas and comfortable student lounge
  • A comprehensive One-Stop Student Services Center with support for admissions, financial aid, advising and more
  • Event and networking spaces for guest lectures, alumni events and community programming
  • Sun-filled, open-plan spaces designed for collaboration and inspiration
  • Modern faculty and administrative offices

A Home for Innovation and Impact

Adelphi’s new Manhattan Center will house a range of programs, including an accelerated bachelor of science in nursing and graduate programs inÌýeducation, business, clinical psychology, , business analytics, social work and creative writing.

“As one of the largest nursing programs in New York State, we look forward to bringing Adelphi’s tradition of excellence and impact to New York City,†noted Thomas Kline, vice president of advancement and external relations. “This and other programs leverage Adelphi’s academic strengths in building healthier communities.â€

A launchpad for the next generation of leaders in the most in-demand professions in and around New York City, the center plans to roll out additional degree and non-degree programs to serve regional workforce needs.

“From Brooklyn to Long Island, and now to Manhattan, Adelphi is making its mark,†said Marc S. Strachan, chair of the Board of Trustees, at the April 10 groundbreaking, “and it will continue to do so. The next generation of Adelphi graduates will have a great center in New York City.â€

What’s Next

Construction is underway on the new space, which Adelphi has leased for 20 years. This expansion comes as part of its University-wide plan to grow its campus footprint, elevate academic excellence and invest in tomorrow’s change makers.

Until the new center’s doors officially open in 2026, Adelphi will continue offering its New York City-based classes at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, where it has been operating since relocating from its former Varick Street campus in 2023.

“Adelphi has been enrolling students in its academic programs in New York City for more than 30 years,†said Riordan. “This new space allows us to take our programs and our impact on the community to a new level.â€

Thanks to the brand-new Panther Express shuttle online schedule, students, faculty and staff who rely on the shuttle buses for trips to local bus and train stations and shopping destinations will no longer have to depend on cumbersome pdf schedules—or phone calls to public safety officers—to catch the shuttle on time. With the interactive shuttle schedule on Â鶹ֱ²¥’s website, our commuter students and visitors headed to Manhattan can seamlessly access weekday and weekend schedules, input desired ride times, and find alerts that may affect their commute—all on their phones or laptops.

Dylan Jaipersaud, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Adelphi’s accelerated Computer Science 4+1 program, was instrumental in the online schedule’s development—from its beginnings to production release—as a student employee.

The Digital Design and User Experience (DDUX) team which is now led by Director of Digital Development and User Experience Courtney Scala ‘06 in the Office of Information Technology began to work on the schedule project in 2021 with the University’s Department of Public Safety and Transportation when Jaipersaud joined the team as a student employee after participating in a hackathon at Adelphi.

From Hackathon Winner to Pivotal Member of the IT Team

Headshot of Dylan Jaipersaud.

Dylan Jaipersaud ’23, MS ’24, who graduated with his master’s degree in December 2024, earned both his BS and MS in Adelphi’s accelerated Computer Science 4+1 program

“The topic for the hackathon was to develop a product to improve student life at Adelphi,†he said. “Panther Pathfinder,†his first place- winning project, was a web application to help new students navigate the campus as well as show them shuttle schedules. Impressed, the hackathon judge and former Adelphi IT DDUX director introduced Jaipersaud to the shuttle project team and hired him for the job he was to hold for the remainder of his time at Adelphi.

Jaipersaud was, he said, ultimately responsible for developing “a management tool that allows members of the public safety team to dynamically create and update online schedules and provide service alerts.â€

The Adelphi IT team is dedicated to giving students personalized, hands-on experiences with experts in the technology field, helping students to build their resumes and launch their careers in this growing field. So they actively encouraged and supported Jaipersaud throughout the project.

“Dylan played a pivotal role in the platform’s development, building its back-end infrastructure and ensuring seamless functionality,†recalled Christine Katz ’10, senior user experience designer. “He worked closely with both public safety and IT teams to address technical and logistical challenges, helping to create a transformative tool for our community.â€

Adelphi web and mobile app developer Ryan Lin, who developed the Adelphi website interface for riders and helped Jaipersaud troubleshoot issues with the management tool, echoed Katz’s praise. “Dylan took on responsibilities ranging from new feature development to bug fixes, ensuring the tool’s reliable performance,†he said. “This has been a long-term, collaborative project where every team member’s input has mattered. Dylan’s work was critical to its success.â€

A Transformative Tool for Commuters —and a Career Win

The new interactive schedule for the Panther Express Shuttle is helping Adelphi reach goals set by its Momentum 2 strategic plan. “It supports Goal 3: Smart Growth and Infrastructure by improving campus operations and enhancing user access to critical transportation services,†Scala explained.

Additionally, she noted the new schedule has burnished Adelphi’s reputation for innovation by establishing the University as “a pioneer among higher education institutions in adopting advanced tools for transportation communication.â€

For Jaipersaud, who plans to continue to make his way up the “computer science ladder†and eventually become a professor, his four years working on the platform were personally transformative. “The experience of working with Adelphi IT was one of the best a student can get in a university,†he recalled. “Being in control of my side of the project and working as a real web developer in college was a special opportunity.

“It was honestly a gift that I cherish and value highly,†he continued. “It changed the way I saw the industry and improved my skills, both technical and interpersonal. Without the real-world experience I gained from this, I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in today. I’ve left Adelphi IT as an experienced, professional software developer with a big project to back it up.â€

Adelphi’s Garden City campus—which is maintained organically as part of our sustainability initiatives and is a registered arboretum—offers a home to many species of flora and fauna. While the bunnies tend to steal the spotlight, students and others heading into Swirbul Library enjoy watching the colorful koi fish, which joined Adelphi more than 15 years ago.

But now the pond is empty. So where are the koi?

Bob Conaghan, associate director of Facilities Management and grounds manager, has been caring for the 75 acres on the Garden City campus for more than 45 years. He’s assisted by a team that includes mechanics and plumbers like Bruce Brine. Initially, Conaghan and his team purchased 24 koi and goldfish from a nursery nearby in the Town of Hempstead as part of their ongoing mission to beautify the campus. Today, there are more than 500 koi.

Conaghan and Brine explained that the pools are drained for winter and the majority of the koi are relocated.

Most of them are now swimming about in one of two holding tanks in the Nexus Building. They’ve been joined by two turtles who were formerly owned by an Adelphi employee but needed a new home.

Others are in a 50-gallon tank in the basement of Swirbul Library. They’re cared for by Brine and his colleagues, who brought in additional fish, such as carp and goldfish, to join their more exotic counterparts.

Some of the larger koi have remained outside and can still be seen circling in the Swirbul south patio pool. Conaghan said the pool’s close proximity to the library warms the water, thus preventing it from freezing.

Life Under Water

According to Conaghan, winter is the hibernation period for the fish: During this period they conserve their energy and barely swim.

When spring comes, it’s time to return to their usual home at the Swirbul entrance. Conaghan said moving the koi takes “them out of their hibernation state.†“That’s when they start laying eggs almost immediately. The water temperature has to be a certain number when they’re going to mate, usually around June,†Brine added. “They lay the eggs sometimes twice a year.â€

The koi have 40- to 50-year life spans. Smaller koi are preyed upon by species like raccoons and egrets, but Conaghan said most of the koi have grown too large for these predators.

The Once and Future Pools

The pools outside Swirbul were originally simple reflecting pools, but “no matter how many hours we put into cleaning and vacuuming, they never looked crystalÌýclear,” Conaghan said. He decided to let water lilies and water irises and the koi act as natural filters. “We receive many more complimentsÌýnow than before.”

And as of this past May, a waterfall has been added, thanks to a donation from Nancy Rogner ’75, which “turned out to be a really big hit,†Conaghan said.

Facilities Management is currently looking into the possibility of adding UV lights and a filtration system to the pool.

Keeping Adelphi Green

Of course, Conaghan and his team are responsible for far more than the koi. The winter break may be a time for students to relax, but Conaghan, Brine and the team are still at Adelphi every day to ensure facilities are in top shape.

Conaghan said he enjoys being the grounds manager the most of his many responsibilities. In this role, he maintains the campus organically, without the use of pesticides. He also gives students and alumni tours, which can include the behind-the-scenes areas where he and the facilities team operate. He’ll talk about anything from the “probably a couple thousand†Italian wall lizards that might be spotted running around on campus to the names of different trees students might see when walking to their next class.

“The students like hearing about these kinds of things,†Conaghan said. “And we talk about many of the other things on campus that are out of sight, out of mind. So when the students leave our tour, they have a much better understanding of the nature around them.â€

President Riordan noted, “As vice chair of the board of trustees, chair of its Work/Life Committee and vice chair of the Finance and Investment Committee, Loretta has provided critical governance, helping to steer and transform the University with unparalleled dedication. This gift extends her extraordinary generosity to make a life-changing impact for Adelphi students, and we are deeply grateful.â€

Cangialosi’s role on the campaign Steering Committee reflects her dedication, with her generous commitment fittingly supporting five of the campaign’s six priorities:

  • Scholarships: The Loretta Cangialosi ’80 Endowed Scholarship Fund, established in 2014 to support deserving students with financial needs
  • Academic excellence: The Loretta Cangialosi ’80 Endowed Innovation Fund, which will be used to identify and drive innovation at the University
  • Life-changing student experiences: The Loretta Cangialosi ’80 Professional Development Fund facilitates internships and real-world experiences for students.
  • A diverse community: The Women’s Leadership Endowed Fund empowers leadership activities and professional development for Adelphi students, including underwriting the cost of their attendance at the University’s annual Women’s Leadership Conference.
  • The Adelphi Fund: Further strengthening support for the University’s greatest needs

In an interview about her support for the Momentum Campaign, Cangialosi explained, “I believe in giving back to Adelphi. An Adelphi education focuses on the core skills one needs to have, but it also opens your mind to new perspectives and new ways of thinking. We want this University to not only exist today, but we want it to exist long into the future—transforming students’ lives through more access to education, more programs and more innovation.â€

Cangialosi is a retired senior vice president and controller at Pfizer Inc., where she worked for more than 27 years. A member of the Â鶹ֱ²¥ Board of Trustees since 2013, she received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Adelphi in 1980.

“Loretta Cangialosi’s extraordinary gift is not just in her philanthropy, but also in her exceptional leadership and dedicated service,†says Thomas Kline, EdD, vice president of University advancement and external affairs. “Her quiet confidence and dedication have made a profound impact at Adelphi. Loretta doesn’t seek the spotlight, yet her influence is far-reaching, exemplified through her leadership on the board of trustees, the Momentum Campaign Steering Committee and as a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Conference Steering Committee. Her generosity extends across a wide variety of initiatives, supporting five of our six campaign priorities, and we are deeply grateful for her commitment to essential causes.â€

As part of Adelphi’s Momentum 2 strategic plan, the University has committed to sustainability goals by dedicating one of its 16 priorities to efforts that support an environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient environment.

Recent initiatives include:

  • The installation of solar panels on the roof of Swirbul Library and the Center for Recreation and Sports, respectively.
  • Adelphi has 18 EV charging stations currently on campus—12 in the Motamed Field garage and six in the Nexus Building garage.

What’s the key ingredient of the successful launch of a major fundraising campaign?

Excitement.

This year’s President’s Gala provided plenty of it, along with inspiring addresses, entertainment provided by a Tony Award-nominated Broadway star and heartfelt tributes to some of Adelphi’s most generous donors.

“We wanted The Momentum Campaign announcement to have extraordinary impact, and I believe it did,†said Thomas Kline, EdD, vice president of University advancement and external relations. “We want our entire community to get excited about the campaign, get involved in it and take pride in it.â€

More than 270 alumni, friends, faculty members, students and their families attended the celebration, which was held at The Garden City Hotel on Saturday evening, September 21. The event raised more than $330,000 for the University.

This year’s honorees were the members of Million Dollar Roundtable, benefactors who have given or committed $1 million or more to the University. Earlier in the day, Adelphi also unveiled a wall of plaques in the Nexus Building honoring each of the members of the Roundtable. Eight of the 26 donors attended the ceremony as well as the Gala: Diane Abbey ’59; Carol Ammon, MBA ’79, ’10 (Hon.); Frank Angello ’77 and Phyllis Angello; Bharat Bhisé, MBA ’78, and Swati Bhisé; LeeAnn Black ’83 and Jeffrey Black; Loretta Cangialosi ’80; Angela Jaggar ’62, MA ’65; and Christine Motamed, who represented her husband, Thomas F. Motamed ’71.

The Momentum Campaign has already secured $75 million of its goal of $100 million. The University expects to raise the remaining amount by the end of the campaign in 2027.

Welcoming the guests at the Gala, President Christine M. Riordan explained the significance of the moment and the importance of the task ahead.

“This campaign is large in ambition, but it is equally large in purpose,†she said. “It is about ensuring Adelphi remains a premier institution of higher education for years to come and continues to be an engine for social mobility and student success.

“By joining us tonight,†she continued, “you are a part of this influential moment in our history and a contributor to our vision. Working together, we can make an extraordinary impact on the lives of our students, our communities and society for generations to come.â€
