Damian Stanley, PhD, assistant professor of psychology in the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, has been awarded a three-year in the amount of $388,026 for his project, 鈥,鈥 aimed at filling a gap in data-driven research on how learning about other people鈥檚 beliefs, intentions and traits can be impaired in different ways across a range of dimensions of mental health.

Dr. Stanley鈥檚 research will use a mix of behavioral and psychological assessments, computational modeling, and neuroimaging (fMRI) to explore how learning about other people is connected to their mental health. The goal of the project is to identify patterns, or social computational phenotypes, associated with distinct dimensions of mental health to inform future research on social-cognitive processes and improve treatment for a broad range of mental health conditions.

鈥淭he ability to learn about people and hold a representation of them in our mind is critical for successful navigation of our social environments鈥攖o maintain healthy relationships and successful careers,鈥 notes Dr. Stanley. 鈥淪pecialized neural systems may support these social-cognitive processes, and their impairment is characteristic of many mental health disorders. However, there is a lack of programmatic research on the social-cognitive aspects of mental disorders.鈥

This project builds on Dr. Stanley鈥檚 previous research, conducted in his聽, which reconstrues theoretical constructs from social psychology within the model-based framework of computational聽neuroscience. Previous work from Dr. Stanley鈥檚 lab on this question include: (Current Biology) and (Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience). In another line of research, Dr. Stanley has focused on the socioemotional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the , a multi-institutional research team he co-leads comprised of researchers from 麻豆直播, the California Institute of Technology, Chapman University, The City College of New York (CUNY), Rutgers University鈥揘ew Brunswick and Yale University. The team also published 鈥溾 in Scientific Data – Nature, providing a window into the psychological, social and emotional impacts of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

鈥淲e are proud of Damian鈥檚 accomplishment with this award and his continuing contributions to our neuroscience faculty,鈥 said Derner Dean J. Christopher Muran, PhD. 鈥淲e look forward to the fruits of his further research on social computational neuroscience and what it can bear on our understanding of mental health.鈥

J. Christopher Muran, PhD, professor and dean of Adelphi University鈥檚 Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, doesn鈥檛 much care for dwelling on individual honors, especially his own鈥攂ut he will if the accolades are meaningful to his institution, as well as colleagues and family who helped make them possible.

In August, the presented Dr. Muran with its 2024 . The recognition, for lifetime achievement, has been presented annually since 1970 and also went to now-retired Derner dean, , in 2018.

鈥淚鈥檝e always believed that the products of our work are the presentations, publications, grants and the mentoring of our students, and that those are more meaningful than awards,鈥 Dr. Muran said. 鈥淏ut a colleague recently reminded me that these honors are important for the whole community, Adelphi, Derner, our faculty (especially junior), and our students and graduates.鈥

A past president of the international , and past editor of its journal, , Dr. Muran was the recipient of its 2021 Senior Distinguished Research Career Award. The same year, he was also presented with the from the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.

鈥淭hese recognitions are special to me, each in different ways,鈥 Dr. Muran said. 鈥淭he SPR has been my professional home for more than 30 years. The APA Division 29 and National Register represent large organizations with a great many practitioners, who are the target audience for my research.鈥

A Focus on the Therapeutic Alliance

While the three recent honors have been for lifetime achievement, Dr. Muran isn鈥檛 nearly done with his professional and academic work. His focus has largely been on therapeutic relationships, particularly the study of ruptures in the therapeutic alliance and development of intervention models and training strategies for their resolution.

He has published more than 180 papers and 10 books, including , written with Catherine Eubanks, PhD, also a Derner professor, and with Dr. Eubanks and another longtime collaborator, Lisa Wallner Samstag, PhD. An upcoming book, Alliance-Focused Training, will be released with a companion video in Summer 2025. Dr. Muran calls that project 鈥渁 culmination of three decades of research.鈥

Recognizing the importance of community for both the Derner School and his other research, Dr. Muran emphasizes the support he has received in his career. 鈥淎rnold Winston, MD, chair of psychiatry at Mount Sinai, who I worked with in my first 20 years in a hospital setting, was an incredible father figure,鈥 he said. 鈥淛eremy Safran, PhD, a professor of psychology at The New School for Social Research, was like a big brother, and many others have supported me, including Catherine Eubanks, PhD, a two-decade colleague; my wife, Elisa Denise Ventur, PhD, who鈥檚 also a clinical psychologist; and my son鈥擨鈥檝e written about our relationship, helping him grow as a person and navigate challenges in his life.鈥

鈥淣ot About Awards or Accolades鈥

Raised in an Armenian family, Dr. Muran notes that in his upbringing, 鈥渓ife was more about process, how you conduct yourself, not about rewards or accolades. Working hard was the aim, not so much recognition for it,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f anything, there was this evil-eye notion that comes up if you start boasting. My dad had a funny Armenian expression which characterizes my ambivalence about awards: 鈥業 don鈥檛 want it, but you can put it in my pocket.鈥欌

In Fall 2022, Dr. Muran started a new chapter in his professional life as dean of the Derner School, succeeding Dr. Barber, who has also been a regular collaborator on research and writing. Dr. Muran had been associate dean and director of the PhD in Clinical Psychology program at Derner for the previous 14 years and also served as interim dean, leading the School through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Muran is optimistic about the future of the Derner School, which was founded more than 50 years ago; its PhD program in clinical psychology was established more than 70 years ago. It added a postdoctoral (now a postgraduate) program, and today has strong undergraduate (including a BS in Neuroscience, offered jointly between Derner and the 麻豆直播 College of Arts and Sciences) and graduate programs (general master鈥檚, mental health counseling and school psychology), 鈥渟omething that is highly unusual, maybe unique, among universities,鈥 Dr. Muran added.

鈥淒erner is evolving, and we face challenges鈥攕uch as the trend of less emphasis on psychoanalysis in the clinical setting鈥攂ut we鈥檝e developed in the last decade an excellent faculty representing diversity in other psychological disciplines and professional orientations,鈥 he noted. 鈥淭he potential for synthesis makes each area better and while there are some competing interests, we will all be more successful working together.鈥

A college is often measured by how well it prepares students for career success.

The Journal鈥攚hich emphasizes student outcomes like graduating salaries, years to pay off net price and graduation rate in determining its rankings鈥攁lso considers Adelphi one of the nation’s top institutions, placing the University at No. 112 on its 2025 list of

鈥淥ur positive outcomes are a result of a University-wide effort鈥攆rom our top-notch academic programs and best-in-class student support services to experimental learning opportunities through programs like Jagger Community Fellows,鈥 said Thomas Ward ’93, assistant vice president for career development and strategic partnerships, who leads the University’s Center for Career and Professional Development. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about that holistic approach to student success across the institution.鈥

Adelphi’s just-released survey of graduating seniors in the Class of 2023 have an average annual salary of $82,539, with 93 percent of respondents having moved into jobs or continuing their education.

Adelphi’s ranking underscores the impact of the University’s Momentum 2 strategic plan on student success and excellence.

鈥淲e really stress that career readiness starts from day one,鈥 Ward said. 鈥淓ven before students take their first academic class, we’re at Orientation talking to them about who we are, what we do and how they can find the career path that’s best for them.鈥

Today’s students at Adelphi have access to more career development resources than ever. The Student Affairs Advisory Board recently launched a Career Readiness Boot Camp for students to conduct mock interviews with alumni, take professional photos for their LinkedIn profiles and network with potential employers.

Adelphi also runs multiple career fairs throughout the year, including one specifically geared toward its largest school, the College of Nursing and Public Health.

Additionally, Adelphi recently partnered with Parker Dewey, a company that specializes in micro-internships, to connect students with short-term, paid, experiential learning and r茅sum茅-building opportunities in their fields. This can be particularly helpful for working students who may not have the time to commit to a 15-week internship.

A U.S. News & World Report Best Value School and Top Performer on Social Mobility

The successful outcomes of Adelphi students are also recognized by U.S. News & World Report, which ranks Adelphi as a 2025 Best Value School and Top Performer on Social Mobility. The University鈥檚 undergraduate programs in nursing and business also climbed in the annual rankings.

Other top publications took notice, too. Adelphi moved up more than 100 spots from last year on the Forbes list of . Similar to The Wall Street Journal, Forbes ranks colleges based on their ability to produce graduates with well-paying jobs and less student debt.

As always, Adelphi will continue to evolve to meet the growing needs of students. This means introducing new experiential learning opportunities and anticipating the influence of emerging technologies on the job market. The next Career Readiness Boot Camp, for example, will include a panel on how AI will impact high-demand fields like healthcare.

鈥淲e’re right in the middle of change,鈥 Ward said. 鈥淲e are, as career counselors, trying to best train and advise our students to be prepared for not only the careers of today, but of tomorrow.鈥

This October, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine again announced that Adelphi was the recipient of a HEED Award, given annually to fewer than 120 colleges and universities across the country that 鈥渄emonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.鈥 This is the seventh year in a row that the University has received the honor.

What accounts for a string of successes that stretches back to 2018?

鈥淲e listen to the members of our community,鈥 answered Chotsani Williams West, MA 鈥07, EdD, assistant vice president of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). 鈥淲e鈥檝e been so intentional about our signature programs and are always working to grow and enhance them in response to the feedback we receive.鈥

An Evolving Mentoring Program Helps Eliminate the Achievement Gap

One of those signature initiatives is Adelphi’s Jovia Mentoring Program, which offers one-to-one guidance from trained faculty and staff mentors. Designed to support lasting success for first-generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students, veterans and active military, and students of color, it is open to all students.

鈥淲e hold exit interviews with all graduating student mentees, and what we found was that they often wished they鈥檇 had more group opportunities to meet with others in the mentoring network,鈥 said Dr. West, who created and launched Adelphi’s Mentoring Program in 2014. 鈥淪o we expanded the meetings and events we have each year beyond the annual get-togethers or during National Mentoring Month, giving our students more and more time聽with one another and access to other mentors.鈥

The program, which helped colleges and schools across the Adelphi campus form their own mentoring programs, has helped the University eliminate the achievement gap traditionally seen in higher education. The retention rates of students of color at Adelphi has been virtually identical to that of white students for the past two years.

A Multicultural Center as a Place of Belonging

Dr. West points to the opening of the Multicultural Center in Fall 2022 as another example of the 础诲别濒辫丑颈鈥檚 intentional approach.

鈥淲e discussed opening a center for a number of years, weighing the pros and cons and asking what the benefits would be,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hen we started hearing terms like 鈥榖elonging鈥 from across the DEIB landscape at the same time our students were telling us they wanted a place to connect that reflects who they are. By the time colleges around the country began considering multicultural centers after 2020, we were already there. We just needed to move forward.鈥

Designing the center was a collaborative effort.

鈥淲e made sure to include student voices,鈥 Dr. West explained. 鈥淟ook at the artwork there. Students chose it and created it with help from the chair of the art and art history department, Kellyann Monaghan, and adjunct faculty member Cara Lynch 鈥12. It reflects what our students want to see.鈥

A Continuing Commitment as a Strategic Objective

Support of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging remains a foundation of 础诲别濒辫丑颈鈥檚 Momentum 2 strategic plan, building on the successes achieved since the first Momentum plan was established in 2015. In just the past year, Adelphi:

  • Welcomed the most diverse first-year class in the University鈥檚 history, with a majority of students of color. Students of color now represent 47 percent of the student body, up from 44 percent in 2023.

All of these accomplishments are products of deliberative, collaborative efforts across the University to nurture a diverse, inclusive environment.

鈥淲e do spend a lot of time in committees, but it all produces results that are to everyone鈥檚 benefit,鈥 Dr. West said. 鈥淚t takes time, but it鈥檚 well worth it. It鈥檚 part of the reason our collective work stands out.

鈥淚鈥檓 very fortunate to do this work, and I love what I do,鈥 she continued. 鈥淚 am truly honored to work with our community and our leadership and, while there is still more to be done, I am extremely pleased that our continuing efforts are聽again聽being recognized with a HEED Award.鈥
