My primary goal as a teacher is to encourage my students to recognize that photographing (and art making in general) is an interpretive and transformative act. An image is both a record of and a reaction to the world. Thus, art students must actively engage in the world around them. They must observe it from multiple perspectives; they must see it as form and inspiration and also as an ever-evolving site of drama, discourse, and dreams. The world is something to notice, to celebrate, to comment on, and to criticize. It is not stagnant. Students must first see it with conviction and passion before they can create meaningful images.
